Jean Houghton
~ Award Winning Pastel Artist
Biography
The dramatic landscapes, heart-warming portraits, mystical waterscapes and floral works of art in pastel by Colorado Springs based artist Ms. Jean Houghton.
A Native of Southern California, Houghton followed her dream from a young age to pursue a career creating art. After owning an art supply store and teaching art in Huntington Beach, Ca, she worked with interior designers, bringing extensive experience and skill to painting sinks and tiles for model homes and custom artwork on furniture and walls. Currently, as a resident of Colorado Springs, Houghton’s work is highly sought after across the United States and internationally. She is widely recognized as an award winning pastel artist, receiving many awards during her career. Houghton is also one of the founders of the Pikes Peak Pastel Society and continues to teach her preferred medium, the art of pastel painting.
Houghton’s masterful technique to pastel painting delights collectors because of the rich, velvety, oil-like quality she achieves in her work. She creates light-infused dreamscapes that invite the viewer to step in and breathe deeply. Collectors easily recognize Houghton’s work by her ability to enhance nature’s vibrant colors with a continual dance of light.
Houghton values the creamy, richness of colors of pastel painting and the ability to blend, for the softness and the bold strokes of a painterly look. Houghton has been painting professionally with pastels since 1998 and frequently paints on location in a natural setting or from photographs. She uses Wallis archival paper, with aluminum oxide granules, which has the texture of sandpaper and holds more pigment and gives richer color. For the highest quality presentation and preservation, she finishes her work with quality archival framing. Pastels are very durable, permanent and, as many of the famous masterworks show, the color brilliancy will last indefinitely with proper care. Artists have used the pastel medium for hundreds of years and many of these art works will exist fresh and colorful as the day they were applied. Pastels do not yellow and the color does not oxidize, change, or fade with age.
Houghton is available to commission work for private collectors and Limited Edition quality Giclee prints are available.
